T-Shirts are available in a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes. You have v-neck t-shirts, placket front t-shirts, crew neck t-shirts, cropped t-shirts, t-shirt dresses, turtleneck shirts, mock turtleneck shirts, and t-shirts with cuffs on the sleeves.
Embroidery is usually done on the left chest. If it is going to be embroidered with a name and a logo, then the name will go on the right chest. You can also embroider on the full front, just below the neck line, the sleeve end, the top of the sleeve, and on the back.

The left chest of a T-Shirt is the most popular location for an Embroidery Design. If a name is being added, the name will go on the right chest. I have given you directions for a basic embroidery design that was placed on the left chest of a t-shirt. These same directions would apply for a basic left chest embroidery on a sweatshirt.
If the design is going above a pocket and is more than two inches high, you should consider placing it on the right chest.
Left Chest Embroidery Design Placement
In the embroidery training video, I show you how to mark for a left chest embroidery design placement on a T-Shirt. I also show you how easy it is to find the center for your embroidery if you are using the Embroidery Design Placement Grid. This Embroidery Design Placement Grid is available in our Online Store.
Video: Left Chest Embroidery Design Hooping
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to hoop a T-Shirt for a left chest embroidery design. In this video, I hoop the T-Shirt flat without the use of a hooping device. It is easier to hoop using a hooping device, but you must know how to hoop flat in case you do not have a hooping device that will work for the hoop or hooping frame that you need for your design.
Video: Embroidery Design Placement Above A Pocket
In this embroidery training video, I show you the embroidery design placement above a pocket on a T-Shirt. This is the same placement that you would do for a pocket on any type of shirt. See the video “Woven Shirt – Above Pocket Embroidery Design Hooping” to see how to hoop above the pocket.
An embroidery design can be placed on the very end of the sleeve, in the center of the sleeve, or at the top of the sleeve. In the video below, I show a sleeve end design placement which is the most popular location. This is on a hemmed sleeve which is the most common. Some t-shirts have a banded sleeve end, as on the Ringer t-Shirts. You would follow the same directions for the banded sleeve end as you would for the Polo-Golf-Staff Shirt Sleeve End Placement.
Video: Sleeve End Embroidery Design Placement
In this embroidery training video, I will show you how to mark for placement of an embroidery design on the end of a sleeve on a T-Shirt. This same information would apply to any type of shirt such as a polo or golf shirt or even a dress shirt that has a hemmed sleeve end instead of a ribbed cuff sleeve end.
Embroidery on a T-Shirt Collar, usually a turtleneck, can be placed in the center of the collar or on the side of the collar. The most popular placement is the left side below the ear. In the information below, I have given you directions on how to embroider on a turtleneck and a mock neck t-shirt.

In this embroidery training video, I show you how to mark for the placement of an embroidery design on the center front and on the left side of the turtleneck collar. This same placement would apply to any type of garment that has a turtleneck collar.
Video: Mock Turtleneck Collar Embroidery Design Placement
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to place a monogram or design on the Mock Turtleneck collar. This video shows where to place the design on the side of the neck. You can also place it on the center front of the collar. I explain the center front placement in the article “Design Placement And Hooping A Mock Turtleneck Collar”. Below is the link to that article. Print it out and place it in your information binder.

Video: How To Hoop The Collar For An Embroidery Design
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to hoop a turtleneck collar in a 12 cm. embroidery hoop without using a hooping device. This is a bit more difficult than the method you would use with a hooping device, but you need to know how to hoop these without one. I am using 2 layers of cutaway backing and water soluble topping.
If you have the freestyle portion of the HoopMaster or the All In 1 Hooper, you will hoop these in a slightly different manner. This is very similar to hooping the fold up cuff of a knit hat. Mark the collar the same as you would in the first video. Instead of turning just the collar up, turn the entire shirt inside out. Slide the shirt onto the hooping device bottom first with the base of the device through the neck opening. This way the hooping device is holding the shirt for you rather than having all the weight of the shirt hanging over the front of the device. The top of the neck will be facing you at the front of the device. The front of the turtleneck will be on top of the board and the back will be under it. Line your mark up in the center of the hoop, put a piece of soluble film down, and hoop it. If your tubular frames only mount on the machine in one direction, make sure they are upside down. You want to run the logo on the collar upside down at 180 degrees. The majority of the shirt will hang over the front of the machine rather than in the back. This way, there is less chance of the shirt sliding under the hoop or getting dirty.
Video: Sewing Design On Collar In The Embroidery Machine
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to place the hooped turtleneck into the embroidery machine. The design must be embroidered upside down or at 180 degrees.
If you have hooped the turtleneck using a hooping device, you will slide the garment on through the neck opening of the shirt. The design will still be run upside down at 180 degrees. The front of the collar will be on top and the back of the collar will be below the neck of the machine. Make sure the back of the collar is not trapped between the bottom of the hoop and the needle plate, or the neck of the shirt will be stitched together.
T-shirts can be embroidered on the full front or full back as well as at the top portion on the neck line on the front or the back. The back neck is a great location for a small logo or the website .com name. In these videos, I give you instructions on the design placement for a full back embroidery. You will follow the same instructions for a full front embroidery.
You would follow these same directions if you want to embroider on the full back of a polo or staff shirt or a bowling shirt.
Video: Full Back Embroidery Design Placement
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to mark the placement for an embroidery design on the center back of a T-Shirt. This same information would apply for the center back of any type of shirt that has a crew neck collar such as a sweatshirt or even a small narrow collar as on many jackets. The Embroidery Design Placement Grid that I am using is available in our Online Store.
Video: Full Back Hooping Using The All In One Hooping Device
In this embroidery training video, I show you how easy it is to hoop a T-Shirt for a full back embroidery design using the All in One Hooping Device. I am using 2 layers of the No show or Mesh cutaway backing.
