Sweatshirts come in a variety of styles. There are sweatshirts with hoods, crew neck sweatshirts, placket front sweatshirts, full zip front sweatshirts, and quarter zip front sweatshirts. The Fireman’s Work Shirt is technically a sweatshirt that has a yoke on the front of it with patches on the elbows. In these videos, I show you different placements and how to embroider your designs in a variety of locations.
You are not limited to these placements. You and the customer can talk and decide about other placements such as the back neck. This is a popular placement for a website .com name or a mascot.

Sweatshirts can be embroidered as a full front or back or just below the neck line on either the front or back. Below, I have given you directions for the embroidery on the full front or the full back. If you are embroidering on the back of a sweatshirt with a hood, your placement will need to be lower than on a sweatshirt with a crew neck or a collar.
Again, you are not limited to these placements. Sweatshirts can be embroidered in many unique locations. They are a very versatile garment with numerous possibilities.
Video: Sweatshirt Full Back Embroidery Placement
In this embroidery training video, I am marking for the placement of a full back design on a sweatshirt. This sweatshirt happens to have a hood, so the placement will be slightly lower. I also talk about placement on a crew neck sweatshirt. This same application would apply to a jacket or t-shirt that has a full back design.
Video: How To Hoop Full Front Or Back For Embroidery Design
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to hoop the sweatshirt for a full front or full back design. In the video, I am hooping it flat because I do not have a template for a hooping device to fit the jacket back size hoop that I chose to use.
I am using 2 layers of No Show backing for the front or back of the sweatshirt. You can use other cutaway backing for the same application, but the no show helps to keep the garment soft, so it will drape nicely after it is embroidered.
Video: Hooping A Sweatshirt For Full Front Felt Applique Letters
In this embroidery training video, I am going to show you how to hoop the front of the sweatshirt for the full front felt applique embroidery design using the HoopMaster hooping device. You must be careful that you have your hoop in the center of the garment, or the design will appear to be off center when your customer is wearing it.
Video: Sewing Applique Felt Letters On The Embroidery Machine
In this embroidery training video, I am showing you how to sew the felt letters on the embroidery machine. This is very simple and easy to do. This is an economical way to do a few items. If you have a large order, you would want to order precut felt pieces and applique them the traditional way using the placement stitch that I show you in the other videos in the applique section. The only exception is that you would be using the run stitch followed by a bean stitch instead of a zig zag or satin stitch.
The applique felt letters can also be done on an embroidery machine that has a cutting laser. That is the ideal way to do the felt applique but for most small shops it is not an option. However, you can make your customers happy by offering this alternative.
Video: How To Give The Felt Appliqued Letters The Finished Look
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to give the felt appliqued letters that finished look. This step is very important in order to get that trendy style you see in the high end clothing stores. You can also use a brush to rough up the edges or wash the sweatshirt after you are finished to help to give it that great distressed look!
Video: Front Pouch Embroidery Design Placement
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to mark the placement for a design on the front pouch of a sweatshirt. You must plan on hooping the pouch sideways for running the design. This must be a small monogram or design. Do not try to embroider a design that is any larger than what will fit in your 12 centimeter hoop. It is too hard to work with.
The vertical line on your pouch will be the horizontal guidelines for hooping the pouch in the center of the hoop or hooping frame. You will be sliding your hoop over the neck of the machine from the left side opening of the pouch. You will also have to rotate your design, either in your software or at the machine, 270 degrees so that your embroidered design will be upright when it is finished.

In this embroidery training video, I show you how to hoop the front pouch of the sweatshirt for the embroidery design. This must be done sideways, which is not like hooping for a normal embroidery.
Video: Sewing The Embroidery Design On The Front Pouch
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to put the hooped sweatshirt pouch into the embroidery machine and sew out the embroidery design. The design must be rotated to sew out correctly. This same application would apply to any garment that has a pouch in the front.
Sweatshirts can be embroidered on either the left chest or the right chest. Usually the embroidery design or logo is embroidered on the left chest. If you are going to be placing a name on the sweatshirt also, that will usually go on the right chest. Other alternative name placements are directly above or below the logo and on the sleeve. The directions below are for a sweatshirt with a yoke. This is also known as a Fireman’s work shirt.
Video: Design Placement On Yoke For Front Left Chest Embroidery
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to mark for placement of a design on the left chest of a sweatshirt that has a yoke on it. This type of sweatshirt is also known as a Fireman’s Work shirt. Your design must not be too large, or it will get in the way of the collar; and it must always follow the line of the yoke, even if the yoke is slightly crooked. This same information would apply to the yoke of a Fleece pullover.
Video: Hooping Yoke For Left Chest Embroidery Design
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to hoop the front left chest on the yoke of a sweatshirt or the Fireman’s Work Shirt. I show you how to hoop it flat without the aid of a hooping device. This same information would apply to hooping the front left chest of a Fleece pullover.
I have included an article that will explain how to hoop a sweatshirt on the left chest that has a collar and a front yoke. If you do not have a hooping device you will have to hoop your garment flat on a table. This is much harder to do but sometimes necessary, depending on your budget. These hooping directions are for left or right chest designs and apply to sweatshirts, sweaters, jackets, or any item that has a front yoke and a collar.

Video: Yoke Left Chest Embroidery Design Sewing On Machine
In this embroidery training video, I will show you how to load the hooped sweatshirt with the yoke into the embroidery machine to sew out the design. This sweatshirt, also known as a Fireman’s Work Shirt, has a higher than normal placement because of the yoke.
Sweatshirts can be embroidered on the left sleeve, the right, or on both sleeves. As a general rule, the left sleeve is the preferred placement. You can embroider at the top of the sleeve, vertically down the sleeve, or even at the bottom of the sleeve.
If you are going to embroider at the bottom of the sleeve, you must limit the size of your design. You will need to use a smaller size hoop, such as a 12 or 8 centimeter, because you have limited space. I have given you directions for embroidery at the top of the sleeve and vertically down the sleeve.
Video: Upper Sleeve Embroidery Design Placement
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to mark for placement of a name, number, or a logo to be embroidered on the top portion of a sleeve on a sweatshirt. This same information would apply if you were placing a design on a T-Shirt, Staff Shirt, or Jacket sleeve. It would also apply to either the left or the right upper sleeve.
Video: How To Hoop Upper Sleeve For Embroidery Design
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to hoop the upper part of the sleeve on the sweatshirt for an embroidery design. I am using the All In One Hooping device to hoop this sweatshirt sleeve.
Video: How To Sew Embroidery Design On The Upper Sleeve
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to place the hooped sweatshirt sleeve into the embroidery machine and sew out the design. When you embroider on the upper sleeve of any long sleeve garment, you should go through the neck opening to place it into the embroidery machine. Make sure that no part of the sweatshirt is caught under the hoop before you start to sew. This same application would apply to any upper sleeve embroidery location.
Video: Vertical Sleeve Embroidery Design Placement
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to mark the placement for a vertical design that covers most of the length of the sleeve. This will be done in 2 hoopings because of the length of the design. This same method would apply to a vertical design on pant legs.
Video: Vertical Sleeve Embroidery Design Hooping And Running
In this embroidery training video, you will see how I hoop the sleeve for the vertical embroidery in 2 hoopings. This is done in a long narrow hoop that is 6″ wide by 12″ long. I then show you how to line it up on the machine and embroider the design. This same application would apply to embroidering down pant legs.
