Jackets can be embroidered in many locations. The most popular placements are the left chest and the full back. However, many jackets are embroidered on the sleeves and the right chest. Jackets are available in a variety of styles, fabrics, and weights. Some jackets have linings, some have interlinings, some have no lining. In these videos, I worked with a thin lined Wind shirt and an unlined Fleece jacket and vest.
The Wind shirt is a woven fabric and the Fleece jackets are treated similar to knit fabrics. You cannot successfully use the same design for each type of jacket. Adjustments must be made in your embroidery designs to accommodate each type.

In this series, I show you how to embroider on the left chest of a lined wind shirt and a fleece vest. You must be very careful when you hoop the wind shirt with the lining. Make sure that you keep the shell and the lining in perfect alignment as you are hooping them. The vest is treated the same as a jacket.

The Left and Right Chest Embroidery Design Placement Chart is located in the Design Placement section of Embroidery Basics on the website.
Video: Fleece-How To Hoop Left Chest For Embroidery
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to hoop the fleece vest for a left chest embroidery design. I hoop the vest flat. If you have a hooping device, your hooping process will go much faster. This same hooping process would apply to any left chest embroidery design placement if you do not have a hooping device.
Video: Fleece-Sewing Out Left Chest Embroidery On The Machine
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to place the hooped jacket into the embroidery machine and sew the embroidery design on the left chest of a fleece vest. This same information would apply to any type of jacket.
In the series, I have used an unlined fleece for Full Jacket Back embroidery. If your jacket has a lining, you must be very careful that you keep the lining in the same alignment with the jacket shell as you are hooping it. This is a problem most often associated with full back and sleeve hooping on lined jackets, but it can happen in any location. In extreme cases, I have found that it is best to pull the jacket over your hooping board and pin the lining and the jacket shell together in a few spots before you try to hoop it. This all depends on the fabric and how slippery the jacket shell and the lining are. Many of the jacket manufacturers are now making linings that either zip out entirely or have access zippers to help avoid or minimize this problem.
There is nothing that looks worse than an embroidered jacket that has a lining which is pulled in the opposite direction. I am sure that you have seen this in your travels. I just want to go up to the person and ask them where they purchased their jacket!
Video: Fleece-Full Jacket Back Embroidery Design Placement
In this embroidery training video, I show you placement for a full jacket back design on the back of a fleece jacket or shirt. This same placement would also apply to any jacket with a short collar or a sweatshirt without a hood. The placement for any garment with a hood will be slightly lower, usually about 2 inches. Refer back to the first video in the Sweatshirt category of Embroidery Techniques.

In this embroidery training video, I show you how to hoop the back of a fleece jacket for a full back embroidery design. I show you how to hoop the jacket flat without using a hooping device for those that do not have a hooping device. This same method will work for any type of shirt back, jacket back, or sweatshirt back.
Video: Fleece-Sewing Out Full Back Jacket Embroidery Design
In this embroidery training video, I show you how to place the hooped jacket into the embroidery machine and sew out the full back embroidery design on a fleece jacket. This same method applies to any full back application as long as there is a large enough opening at the neck. You must be very careful when you place the jacket into the embroidery machine. You do not want any of the fabric that should not be embroidered caught between the hoop and the neck of the machine.
If you have garments with small neck openings, placing the garment in the machine with the bottom first may work better. Some of the newer style zipper access jackets have a zipper at the bottom of the jacket so that you can embroider on the shell rather than through the lining. You will want to load these into your machine bottom first also. When loading from the bottom, remember to turn your hoop in the right direction and run the design upside down at 180 degrees. You must still be careful to make sure the bottom of the garment does not slide in between the neck of the machine and the hoop.
