The Importance Of Underlay Stitching?

Video: Intro To Understanding Underlay Stitching

In this first video in the Understanding Underlay Stitching series, I am going to teach you the basic functions of underlay, the basic rules of underlay, and the different types of underlay stitching. Knowing why you should use underlay stitching in your embroidery design and which type to use is key to having a design that will look great! Underlay stitching is the most important and most under rated element of creating your design. Like anything else that is built, you need a good foundation and Underlay is the foundation of your embroidery.

Video: Understanding The Underlay Stitching Settings

In part 2 of this Underlay Embroidery Video series, I explain and show you the underlay stitching types and settings inside of the Tajima by Pulse Embroidery software. Each embroidery software has its own names for the different types of underlay stitching but many of the terms are universal within most embroidery software programs.  I also show you how to create basic manual underlay under tiny letters.

How To Create Manual Underlay Stitching(1)

Part 2-Manual Underlay

During this module, I teach you how to create underlay stitching manually when the automatic settings do not work in your software. There are times when your designs or lettering will look much better when you apply underlay manually. You have more control over the underlay stitching and it can make a huge difference especially when you are dealing with tiny lettering.

Video: Creating Underlay Under A Complex Fill Object With Holes

In this Manual Underlay Embroidery Video, I show you How To Create Manual Underlay Under A Complex Fill Object That Has Holes in the design. These holes are to remain open in the embroidery design and sometimes they can create issues with the automatic underlay settings.

I started out creating the entire segment manually. When I had the webinar, several students made suggestions so I created this design using automatic underlay in parts of the design and manual underlay in other parts. This is a combination that is working fine in this design. It may not work for all designs but it is a good method to use whenever you can and it still has the same effect as total manual underlay.

Thank you to all of you that gave me suggestions or were questioning why I was doing it entirely manually. I always welcome suggestions; it leads me to investigate new ways of doing things and we can all learn new techniques as a result!

Video: Conclusion Of Creating Manual Underlay

In this last Manual Underlay Embroidery Video, I show you how to finish the complex fill object with the combination of automatic and manual underlay. I also show you the same complex fill tree that I created entirely with manual underlay. I sewed out both versions and they were very comparable in quality.
